Students will be able to modify the planet and then drop an object to determine the acceleration on the planet. As the object drops, it will display a velocity vs. time graph and students will find the slope of this graph to find the acceleration due to gravity on the planet.

Note that the number in parentheses beside each fluid or each ball material is the specific gravity. The specific gravity is the ratio of the density of that material to the density of water. Hence, the specific gravity of water is 1. The specific gravity of olive oil being 0.92 means that olive oil has a density that is 92% of that of water. Aluminum, on the other hand, has a density of 2.7 times that of water.

Viscosities:

Here are the values the simulation has for the viscosities - note how different they are. The units are pascal seconds (Pa s).

Water: 0.001

Olive oil: 0.08

Glycerol: 1.4

And the mythical fluid “None” has a viscosity of zero and a density of zero. Just don’t tell Aristotle.

The simulation shows a ballistics cart. If the cart is at rest on a horizontal surface, it will shoot a ball straight up in the air, and catch the ball again. What if, as in this simulation, the cart is traveling at a constant velocity horizontally, instead? Will the ball land ahead of the cart, in the cart, or behind the cart? Note that the cart fires the ball straight up, with respect to the cart, when the middle of the cart passes the small vertical trigger on the track.
Use the buttons to select the different modes (whether there is a tunnel or not, and whether to show the velocity vectors).

This force has some things in common with the force an electric field exerts on a charged particle, but there are also key differences between them. One thing that is apparent in the simulation is that one possible outcome of a magnetic field applying a force on a charged particle is that the particle experiences uniform circular motion, so exploring the magnetic force will also give you a chance to review circular motion concepts.
