This game is useful for practicing animal related words and phrases. While it is good to know the words for animals, it is not really all that useful in everyday life. So I wanted to make a game with animals that was more constructive and actually practiced making phrases. At the same time, I wanted to make a game that could practice basic verbs question forms such as 'how many', 'is it', 'can it' and so on. Animals and animal guessing gives a context in which using these verb phrases can be meaningful. The general idea is that you have to guess the mystery animal. In order to do you must narrow down the possible choices by asking questions which, hopefully, provides context and meaning for the question phrases.

The object of the game is to guess the eight hidden animals that are presented, one at a time, behind a question mark. Possible animals are display above the mystery box and are eliminated as questions are asked. The user can guess which animal it could be at any time by making a "I guess .... " phrase.

Some of the items may seem a bit ambiguous or strange; it is quite hard to think of enough forms that can be used to describe a range of animals. This is why there are questions about dragons eating meat and other such things that may not be immediately obvious. At the same time, sorry if there are any answers that are wrong or probably wrong - dolphins eating fish and so on.

I hope that this game can be useful practice for forming questions with matching of question words and auxiliaries. At the same time, hopefully it will re-enforce the meanings of the forms through practising them in a contextual way. While vocabulary for animals may not be the most useful for everyday life, constructing basic question forms is a lot more applicable.

The background image was drawn on the basis of a photo I took in the mountains in the south of China, with a few other Chinese type elements added in to make it look more interesting. It was supposed to be quite China themed with the long wall and Chinese style roof; I really hope it looks appealing.

This game should work on mobiles and tablets but please leave a comment if it does not do so. And please leave any comments on what you think or if there is anything that could be improved.

This is a simple game for practicing brief reading comprehension. To play, you read the brief description and then click on the image that it most accurately describes. The aim is to practice understanding for short English sentences in a fun way. By having the player match the description to an image, it is hoped that meaning or context can be elicited more effectively.

When playing, you can select the content to use from a range of 20 or so different sets. Each set has 20 to 30 items and each item has two different (but quite similar) descriptions. The first description is quite simple, while the second tries to be more difficult. The easier descriptions show first and then as you progress the more difficult ones show. To finish the game, you have to go through the whole set of content twice. To try and make the game more interesting, score is accumulated and a high score table is shown at the end. Most of the other games on this site use a timer to make the game challenging. Rather than do this again, this game just has score and a bar that accumulates and awards more points. The bar accumulates as you get the correct answer, but then resets whenever a mistake is made. If you can get six correct responses in a row, the star is shown and additional score is given.

Update Jan 2017 This game seems to still be popular even though it was made more than 7 years ago and uses software (flash) that a lot of browsers do not even have. This seems to be because there are quite a few links directly to this page - most users come from Google. I guess this is because this game is quite specific in the language that is practiced; teachers can study time telling in class and then get their students to review the content here. At the same time, to me this game looks quite dated and unappealing. I don't think the game itself is very interesting and think the menus are quite out of place. What's more, the game won't work at all on mobile or tablet devices. I don't have any plans to make a new version of this game, but will continue to keep an eye on the visitor numbers.

Practice telling the time in English with this fun game.

At the first screen there is a clock that you can play around with. As you move the hands of the clock to different times you can read how that time is told in English. So if you adjust the clock to half past six then the English way of saying that time is shown.

I hope that English learners can use this to study or review how to tell the time in English. This can often be a difficult area for learners of English as a second language. In Thai for example the day is divided into four parts instead of two. However telling the time is an important and useful part of learning a language.

After the first screen you can play a game where you have to read the text and the click on the clock that shows the time being described. I hope that by playing this game learners can re-enforce the language they study from the clock on the first screen. The challenge of the game comes in helping the small man across the bridge by not making any mistakes. I hope that you can enjoy playing this game and can learn and review some English while doing so. Leave any comments you have below in English.

This game uses HTML5 and javascript. For the previous flash version click here

This game is a version of the classic game concentration. Intended here to help students learn vocabulary items by matching images and words. You can also listen to the audio when you look at the images. The game is simple and hopefully fun. You click on pairs of squares and match the words to the pictures. If you reveal a matching pair of picture - word then you get points and those squares disappear. You have to match all the images and words as quickly as possible. The concentration part comes in remembering where the images or words are. The time you have to match all the squares runs down quickly and so you have to be faster and faster in each round.

As with other games you can choose the content you like from the list of vocabulary items. The same set of vocabulary items repeats continuously and so you can get repeated exposure to the same target language. Then you can exit and switch to a different set of vocabulary items and play again. At the end of the game there is a table to show the highest scoring learners.

Matching the pairs helps learn the vocabulary items as it allows for an association between the images, text and audio. By revealing the image and hearing the audio at the same time, an association is formed. Then when the matching text is revealed, the association is further strengthened. Because of this, it is quite important to hear and listen carefully to the audio. While I don't think it is possible to completely learn a whole set of content just from playing this game, I think it is possible to learn a few new items from a set while also reviewing other items.

The previous version of this game had a timer which ran down quickly and required you to move and think quickly. A few people suggested that it would be better if the game were slower and the user were able to think without being rushed. That that basis, this version does not have a time as a challenge element; however, there it does keep track of the number of turns, or reveals, that have been made. It is hoped that this will maintain an element of challenge, so that the game is still interesting, while also allowing enough time to think and focus on the items.

I really hope that you like this game and can have fun learning and improving. Leave a comment below in any language you like. Comments need to be approved by me first due to excessive spam and offensive postings.
